What is the Masters Tournament?

The 85th annual Masters Golf Tournament is one of the biggest sporting events of the year and one of four major championships in professional golf. Last year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we didn’t get a finish to the Masters tournament until November. Luckily, this year the Masters are able to take place back on their original timeline during the first full week of April. They start on Monday, April 5th and run until the following Sunday. The Masters Tournament goes back all the way to 1934 when the inaugural was held by Bobby Jones, the co-designer of the Augusta National.

The Masters tournament consists of four rounds of 18 holes each. Competitors play in groups of three for the first two rounds, with players sharing playing partners in the first two rounds. After the first 3 holes, the field is cut to the top 50 players or whoever is within 10 strokes of the lead. This year’s purse is eleven and a half million dollars!

When is the Masters Golf Tournament in 2021?

The Masters Tournament will be held at Augusta National and will air live on Thursday, April 9th through Sunday, April 11th. Last year’s Masters Tournament was delayed for seventh months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year’s contest will play at the same time as in years past, starting the first full week of April. The 85th Masters Tournament starts with the early rounds on Thursday, April 8th and will show on ESPN, CBS Sports and all applicable streaming sites and apps. The later rounds will follow on Saturday, April 10th, and Sunday, April 11th, with some room for delays. ESPN and the Golf Channel’s coverage of the Masters Tournament will start Thursday morning of the 8th and continue all the way through to the end of the tournament.

How to Watch the Masters Golf Tournament Online

The Masters Tournament is available through ESPN, CBS, the ESPN app, the CBS Sports App, YouTube TV and Hulu. While most platforms require you to buy a subscription to the service, the CBS Sports App only requires a valid US address and IP address for you to stream the Masters Golf Tournament for free. The CBS Sports App is available for most devices and tablets and has used a similar setup for March Madness and other sporting events.

If you only want to stream the early rounds, Sling TV Orange will allow you to watch the tournament through ESPN. Please note that you would need to be subscribed to the Orange package of Sling TV (as opposed to just the base set up).
