The Oscars Award Show

The Oscars, or 93rd Academy Awards, is an international award show for the best and brightest of Hollywood. Honoring both the artistic and technical side of the film industry, the Oscars are considered the most prestigious awards in the entertainment field. These awards are held annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The most popular artistic categories at the Academy Awards are Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Animated Feature. Technical awards include Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Sound. Award winners receive a coveted trophy, called an “Oscar,” which is an art deco representation of a golden knight that was popular during the early days of Hollywood filmmaking.

When are the 2021 Oscars?

The Oscars will stream on April 25th, 2021 at 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time this year. The Oscars were originally set to stream at the end of February, but the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures decided to push them back due to the pandemic. As a result, the 93rd Academy Awards eligibility period was extended -- something that is unprecedented in the history of the awards. After this year, the AMMP has announced that the Oscars will return to their regular timeline with the 94th Academy Awards expected to take place in February of 2022.

The 93rd Academy Awards start with red carpet coverage at 6:30 Eastern Standard Time on April 25th, 2021 on ABC and available streaming sites and apps. E! Television’s coverage of the Oscar’s pre-show will start at 1 PM Eastern Standard Time, with host Ryan Seacrest taking over coverage at 7:30 PM EST and the show starting at 8.

How to Watch the Oscars Online for Free

The 93rd Oscars will be available on several streaming sites this year. That includes ABC’s website and app and traditional outlets such as broadcast TV, which will offer US residents streams free of charge. Hulu and YouTube TV will also offer streaming of the event, and Roku, Comcast Xfinity and AT&T TV Now subscribers will have access to streams of the Oscars. Unfortunately, if you are a Slingbox or Philo subscriber those services will not offer a stream of the Oscars. The pre-show red carpet feed, Oscars All Access: Red Carpet Live, will be available to stream for free from the Academy’s official Twitter account. Unfortunately, many people living outside the US will be unable to watch it.

How to Stream the Oscars with a VPN

If you live outside the US or are traveling, you may need to use a VPN to stream the 93rd Academy Awards. That’s because ABC has limited streaming to US subscribers. A VPN is an effective way to get around this by changing your IP address to appear local to the United States. Getting started is extremely easy.

  1. Sign up for VyprVPN
  2. Connect to a server located in a country where the Oscars are streaming (the United States is a good bet)
  3. Log onto the ABC website
  4. Watch the awards from the comfort of your own home.
